Taste-testing the goods from Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop

Do your kids love s’mores so much, they’d even drink a s’mores-flavored soda? Well, now they can! The recently opened Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop offers a wide variety of wild soda flavors kids go wild about.

Located in the heart of The Glen Town Center, Illinois’ first Rocket Fizz franchise (1859 Tower Drive, Glenview; 224-661-3142) opened in early August. The store carries about 500 flavors of soda, and the company produces 105 flavors itself, including pumpkin pie and bubble gum. Rocket Fizz even concocts special collections like the high-demand Dictator line, whose Nuclear Orange Bomb pop features Kim Jong-il on the label.

And it’s not just drinkables: You’ll also find fun and inventive candy, including over 90 flavors of salt-water taffy. Parents typically go for the nostalgic sweets and toys like candy buttons Wooly Willy cartoon faces and Mr. Bill action figures. Rocket Fizz also sells gag toys (snakes in a can, fart machines, stick-on mustaches and underpants for squirrels), and customers can take pictures with life-size figures of Captain America, Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc., and E.T. (cast from the original movie mold, complete with Reese’s Pieces).

Just Kidding wanted to find out if Rocket Fizz was truly kid-approved, so we did some candy and soda shopping, then recruited three young testers to tackle the arduous task of tasting the goods. Schaumburg’s Erin and Izzy Troyer, ages 5 and 8 respectively, and Sarah Aguilar, 8, of Hoffman Estates were excited to become candy critics for a day. They tasted four of Rocket Fizz’s most diverse sodas, some of the contemporary candies and a few classic candies. The overall consensus? They love just about everything the Rocket Fizz to offer — click through our photo gallery to discover their faves, and the one item they absolutely didn’t like.
