There’s a “sweet” new store that is officially open on Gervais Street in downtown Columbia. Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop held its grand opening Saturday afternoon from noon until 6 p.m. The store offers a variety of candy and small toys, but specializes in sodas.
Employees greeted customers as they came in, offering candy and soda samples throughout the store. There was also an employee from a North Carolina location that came down for the day to entertain customers with magic tricks.
Hundreds of sodas, in drastically varying flavors, are lined up on shelves throughout the store. Some flavors are expected, like black cherry or ginger-ale. Other more unexpected flavors include sweet corn, butter, pickle juice, and even grass.
Store manager Latoya Davis said she’s tried tons of the flavors, and has loved them all. “Even the ones with the funky names, like you might see ‘martian poop,’ or ‘barf’ and think that’s disgusting. But they’re honestly some of the best sodas I’ve ever had,” she said.
Davis also said when customers come into the store, it tends to put everyone in a good mood. “If you come in here, you can’t be mad. And if you are, you’re going to leave happy,” she said. “There’s a good time to be had.”
The Columbia Rocket Fizz is owned by Ann Sims, who also owns another location in Fayetteville, North Carolina. It’s located at 929 Gervais.
