Rocket Fizz

Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it in dew, cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two? It’s the candyman, of course, a.k.a. David McLaughlin, owner of Boulder’s newest candy store, Rocket Fizz Soda Shop and Candy Shops.

Today McLaughlin, a Fairview High and CU grad, opened his magic doors on Boulder's Pearl Street Mall to a happy, sweet-toothed clientele.

Rocket Fizz specializes in hard to find and novelty candy (think Sugar Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and candy cigarettes) plus a plethora of 400 interesting flavors of soda pop (birch beer, sweet corn, Judge Wapner Cream Soda, even bacon), with some obscure Japanese concoctions like seaweed-flavored chocolate and Korean Hello Kitty gum thrown in.

But, will all this sugar and decadence fly in health-obsessed Boulder?

It probably will, because it’s not really about the sugar and the decadence; it’s about the experience and the nostalgia. If you browse the glittery, colorful aisles in Rocket Fizz, you’ll hear excited murmurs like “Man, I haven’t seen this since I was a kid!”

And for those who worry about the taint of sugar, Rocket Fizz also carries a large selection of stevia-sweetened candy and sodas.

In these uncertain economic times, the candy industry is flourishing – the U.S. candy manufacturing industry grew by a sweet five percent last year. It’s all about the experience and the escape to things we loved in childhood: things that speak to our inner, happy places.

I mean, who really can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream, separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream? You guessed it...
