It's unknown if Rocket Fizz Soda Pop and Candy Shop in downtown Campbell got a bump in business after one of the chain's co-founders appeared on an episode of a hit reality television show, but local owners enjoyed the sweet surprise.
Robert Powells, co-founder and president of the sweet shop chain, made a television appearance Jan. 23 on an episode of "Undercover Boss," putting each location on the map.
The novelty candy and gag gift shop has locations in California and Florida. The shops were the focus of the CBS show in which co-founders or CEOs go undercover as employees in their own businesses. Powells was transformed into a reality television star to perform the many tasks his employees do every day.
"We had lots of fun watching Rob in other stores, especially because we know how well he knows the products," said Palo Alto and Campbell shop co-owner Lisa Pelgrim.
Although the 220 E. Campbell Ave. location did not make an appearance on the show, business downtown remains as busy as before. It is unclear if Powell's appearance on the show nearly two months ago resulted in a bump in business at the Campbell shop.
"It's hard to tell. We've had a better year this year" overall, Pelgrim said.
She added that after the episode of "Undercover Boss" aired, customers would come in and tell her about the chain being featured. At one point, the merchandise that was to accompany the show's airing sold out.
Pelgrim added that Powells is a frequent visitor to the Bay Area locations when traveling through California. Pelgrim said she and her husband, Chris Dunn, have known Powells for about four years.
"He was in our Palo Alto shop two weeks ago," Pelgrim said.
The company was founded in 2007 by Robert Powells and Ryan Morgan when they began selling fake dog poop. Soon after Rich Shane became the CEO in 2012. The Campbell location will celebrate its fourth year in business June 21.
