Their first major customer was the United States Army back during World World II, it was exclusively only sold to them so that the brave soldiers were able to carry chocolate in tropical weather without having to worry about it melting. The idea of creating these little chocolate goodies came from its founder, Forrest Mars Sr, after seeing soldiers eating Smarties back in the 1930s during the Spanish War.
