As the rhythms of jazz fill the streets during the Greenville, SC upcoming jazz festival, it’s the perfect time to take a delicious trip back to the golden age of swing, speakeasies, and timeless candy classics. The 1920’s and 1930’s weren’t just revolutionary for music – they were also an unforgettable era for American candy.
The Jazz Age brought excitement, creativity, and indulgence after World War I. Candy became more affordable and more widely available, making it a small luxury families could even enjoy during the difficult years of the Great Depression.
Jazz Age Favorites You Can Find in Our Store
Several iconic candies that are still loved today either debuted or rose to popularity during this era, all of which we carry here at our Greenville, SC store. Our personal store picks from this era are:
Charleston Chew – Definitely our number one nostalgic favorite. The classic vanilla version tastes like marshmallow, milkshake, and nostalgia all rolled together. It’s not overcomplicated, just simple, sweet, chewy comfort candy.
Bit-O-Honey – This one always stands out because it’s not chocolate-based like a lot of candy bars from that era. The flavor is warm and mellow: honey sweetness, creamy taffy, and roasted nutty notes all blended together. As the old ads bragged “every bit of Bit-O-Honey goes a long way”.
Oh!Henry Bar – Basically the “loaded baked potato” of the old-school candy bars – packed with peanuts, caramel, fudge, and chocolate all fighting for attention in the best possible way. This one is definitely a staff and customer favorite in our store.
Chuckles – Pure cheerful chaos in candy form – little sugar-coated jelly blocks lined up in a rainbow of colors, each one with that soft texture that sits somewhere between gumdrops and jelly candy. They are unapologetically fun, with five classic flavors – cherry, lemon, lime, orange, and licorice.
We also carry many other nostalgic sweets from that era, such as Snickers, Wax Bottles, Root Beer Barrels, 5th Avenue, Jujyfruits, Zagnuts, Milk Duds, and C.Howard’s candies. But, our store isn’t just a trip down memory lane – it’s a full candy experience that brings together the best of every generation. Our customers can relive childhood while also discovering the newest candy crazes all in one spot. It’s the kind of place where grandparents, parents, teens, and kids can all walk out excited – because everyone finds something they love every time.
