Artful Shopper: Rocket Fizz at Gulf Coast Town Center

Talking shop with Shawn Adams, co-owner with wife Jean Adams, of Rocket Fizz in Fort Myers.

How did the store come about?
The store is a franchise. My wife and I are originally from Massachusetts. We made this decision in the middle of a storm. That was the winter we got 100 inches of snow. One of the owners of Rocket Fizz was on the TV show “Undercover Boss.” It aired January 2014. We made it our plan to move down here.

When did the store open?
It opened on Oct, 8

What do you sell?
We sell fun. We sell candy and sodas from all over the country. Some are from out of the country like Australia and Japan. We sell the old-time sodas you had from when you were a kid. We sell nostalgia candy, hard candy, taffy, and old concert posters. We sell a bunch of gag gifts. All kinds of different things.

What do you have for Halloween?
We have Halloween masks, glasses and small things you can add to your costume.

What are your biggest sellers?
The old style cigarette candies and the Rocket Fizz sodas. There are 150 different ones with names like Sweet Corn and Buffalo Wings. Some names dictate what they taste like and some don’t. We try to have two a day.

What are some of your favorites?
Yesterday we had a frosty vanilla root beer. It was fantastic. Another one I like is the Sprecher Orange Dream. It is a creamsicle in a bottle. We do have a refrigerator so you can have cold ones, but you can't have everything cold. We have over 500 of them. We just got our Japanese candy in and we just got our British candy.

What is unique about your store?
Probably the vast amount of inventory that we have. When you come through the door, there’s so much to look at. You could spend hours in here. There are 130 stores in the country. There is one in Tampa, but we’re the only in the Southwest Florida area.

Who is your typical customer?
I think that’s the uniqueness of our store. That it appeals to so many different people. Late at night, we get the college crowd. Earlier in the day, the parents bring the kids in. We get a good mix across the board.

Any sales or promotions?
We’re participating in the kids trick or treating this weekend. We’ll have a soda sampling. We just sell a lot of fun. Everybody comes in here and has a good time.
